Window treatments are great for a number of reasons. They make your space look complete while offering functionality: not only do they add texture, dimension, and colour to a room, they can also provide privacy and insulation. Choosing curtains that best suits your needs can be difficult but we have put together 5 helpful tips to guide you along the way.

1. Think about the functionality

First, consider the best functionality new curtains could provide for your space. Are you planning to block light from outside during certain hours of the day? Or would you prefer natural light to shine through your bedroom room window treatments? Maybe you’re looking for ones that can add an element of privacy to specific rooms. Start by making a list of the functionality you’d like for your new curtains. These considerations will help you decide on the proper fabric, as well as whether you need a single set of curtains, multiple sets to rotate seasonally, and/or a double rod for a top and bottom layer of curtains.

2. Pick a fabric

Once you have completed the functionality list – you’ll move into what fabric works best. If you want to create more drama and give the room a formal feel, you might want to consider heavier fabrics such as silk or velvet. They also block light, provide privacy and insulate well. If you’re going for a more casual look, try a lighter weight fabric such as linen. Panels made of cotton are casual, easy to clean and allow plenty of light to filter through, helping the room stay bright and cheerful.

3. Colour

When selecting a certain colour, think about whether you want your curtains to blend in with the decor or stand out on their own. White, ivory and other neutrals are light, airy and blend into the space. Rely on stronger colours like blues and greys to make a bolder statement.

4. Prints and patterns

If you have patterned furniture or bedding, you may find it easier to coordinate solid curtains to avoid a look that’s too busy.  If you have solid coloured furniture and/or bedding, printed curtains turn windows into a design element on their own.
